Rajon Rando: Using Social Media to give back

While most athletes and celebrities use social media simply to be heard, some use it to help give back to their communities and promote worthwhile causes. Rajon Rondo, the starting point guard of the Boston Celtics, springs to mind as a player who attempts to use social media to promote a good cause.

Rondo partnered with Red Bull to launch the Boston's Got Wings on his Facebook page. The initiative was simple. For every steal Rondo recorded during the 2010-11 season, Rondo and Red Bull would donate $500 to the Boston Parks and Recreation Department. Rondo wound up with 153 steals (4th in the NBA) and the Boston Parks accepted a check for $76,500. 5 basketball courts in Boston ended up getting completely refurbished and were unveiled by Rondo and the mayor of Boston last week.

Rondo used his Facebook page to promote the effort and shed light on the poor conditions of the Boston Parks, which due to lack of funding had been deteriorating for years. In doing so Rondo positioned himself as a role-model and became even more of a fan-favorite.

The end result of Rondo's initiative. People followed his efforts on Facebook

Rondo is not only the Celtic using social media to further a cause close to his heart. Paul Pierce, a Celtic veteran, launched his campaign, The Truth on Health, on Twitter and Facebook in an attempt to get young children to eat right and be active. He also blogs regularly on Boston.com about the campaign and his efforts to get children in Boston to live a healthy life.

On his Facebook page Pierce looks to engage his followers and promote an active lifestyle. He had a recent contest where his fans could send him a healthy activity photo for the chance to meet Pierce. On Twitter he promotes healthy initiatives and urges his followers to get active. He may also be the first NBA player to express a love for gardening. His @truthonhealth twitter handle has over 5,000 followers and I imagine that number will climb. It's great to see an NBA basketball player who would rather tweet about healthy living than talking about his weekend in Vegas.
